Journeyman Education

  • 1989: Remonti Intarsiatori, Treviglio Italy

    Trained in the advanced art of inlay techniques and marquetry for six months. Currently returning to Treviglio and Pietra Santa 2 to 8 weeks per year to work on new projects involving wood and stone inlay.

  • 1987: Piti Mosaic, Florence and Pietra Santa, Italy

    Worked with two Pietra Dure Masters creating stone marquetry mosaics.

  • 1981: Japanese Wood Joinery Seminar, NH USA

    Completed 3 week intensive course covering tools and joinery techniques used by six Japanese master temple builders.

  • 1974: Wernli Klavier Fabrik, Bern, Switzerland

    One year apprentice to master craftsmen, learning piano building, repairing and tuning techniques, with emphasis on design and handwork.

Master Degrees

  • 1983: International Boat Building Training Center (IBTC UK) Lowestoft, England

    Completed one year training as a boat builder, restoring and constructing new and traditional water craft. Graduated with Distinction.

  • 1978: Neidhart und Loete Orgel Fabric, Neuchatel Switzerland

    Three and one half year apprenticeship program with 12 trade masters in the art of designing, building and finishing church organs for churches and private residences throughout Europe. Graduated with honors.

Personal Experience

  • 1980-Present: Schürch Woodwork, Santa Barbara California

    Custom furniture making studio since 1981 making original pieces for private clients, designers and galleries such as North West Gallery of Fine Woodwork in WA, Wexler Gallery in Baltimore, Kent Galleries in New Mexico, Once a Tree Gallery, Quatrain in CA. I have participated in, or singularly completed approximately 380 new projects to date. (2015), and have done countless repairs to fine antique furniture.

    Teaching activities involves woodworking training programs for young adults, consulting for the woodworking industry and teaching seminars in addition to having written and published two educational DVDs with books, and three on-line educational programs. I have been published by Lark, Taunton Press, Architectural Digest, Metro, Sunset Magazine, Home and Garden and many trade journals. I am currently teaching seminars at the Mark Adams School, Center for Craftsmanship in AZ, lecturing at museums, universities and various woodworking clubs across the United States about 4-6 times per year.

    Overseeing the on-line retail store for ‘Ventools’ , that sell veneering and marquetry tools, education and supplies, for the novice and professionals.

  • 1986: The Boston Star Pilot, California to New York

    Worked as master carpenter aboard the schooner Star Pilot on one year CA to NY delivery to participate in the Tall Ships Bi-centennial NY parade in 1996.

    Continued involvement in the high-end yacht, auto and aircraft industry.

  • 1979: Gumilgen Orgel Fabrik, Bern Switzerland

    Worked as journeyman/ master church organ builder, designing and completing various organ building projects over the period of two years.
